How it works

Press Start listening and allow the microphone. The meter, envelope and spectrum begin at once.

Watch the Level card for RMS loudness in dBFS and the peak hold line; the Dominant frequency card names the strongest tone and its nearest note in cents.

The envelope scrolls the last ten seconds of loudness with its max and min marked; the spectrum shows energy from 20 Hz to 20 kHz on a log scale with falling peak caps.

To read something closer to SPL, type the offset that matches a reference meter into Calibration offset. Reset stats clears min, average, max and the peak hold.
Questions
What does dBFS mean and why are the numbers negative?
dBFS is decibels relative to digital full scale: 0 is the loudest signal the microphone can deliver and everything quieter is negative. The meter shows -100 for digital silence. It is not a sound pressure level; use the calibration offset if you want the numbers to line up with an SPL meter you trust.
Is the audio recorded or uploaded?
No. The stream feeds an analyser node in your browser, each frame is measured and discarded, and nothing is stored or sent. Stopping the monitor or leaving the page releases the microphone.
Why is the dominant frequency blank or jumping?
It only reports when the signal is above about -72 dBFS and a clear spectral peak exists. Speech and noise have no single pitch, so the reading moves; whistle, hum or play a sustained note and it settles, smoothed over five frames.
Why does it turn off noise suppression?
Browser processing (echo cancellation, noise suppression, automatic gain) rewrites the signal before you see it, which makes a level meter lie. The monitor asks for the raw stream so what you measure is what the microphone hears.
